What makes Pleasant Hill Products different from store-bought soap?
Most commercial "soap" bars are actually synthetic detergents that can strip your skin's natural protective barrier. Our cold process soaps are true soap, made by combining natural oils with sodium hydroxide (lye) through a process called saponification. This process naturally produces glycerin, a wonderful moisturizer that big manufacturers typically remove and sell separately. Our bars keep all that goodness right where it belongs.
Is there lye in the finished soap bar?
No. While sodium hydroxide (lye) is essential to the soap-making process, it is completely transformed during saponification. After our bars cure for four or more weeks, no lye remains in the finished product. What you're left with is a gentle, skin-loving bar of real soap.
What key ingredients do you use, and why?
We carefully select each ingredient for a reason. Castor oil boosts lather and conditions the skin, while coconut oil creates a rich, bubbly cleanse without stripping moisture. Activated charcoal acts like a magnet for impurities, binding to excess oil, dirt, and sweat, which makes it especially helpful for oily or acne-prone skin. Bentonite clay is a mineral-rich volcanic clay that absorbs excess oil, unclogs pores, and gently exfoliates. We also use essential oils for natural fragrance and skin benefits.
